Cosmetic Surgery Booming Despite Health Scare by French Implant Company

As per the new study conducted by the Paris-based IMCAS, which represents plastic surgeons and dermatologists, the beauty procedures grew globally by 10.1% year-on-year in 2011 to 3.8 billion euros as against 3.2 billion euros. These beauty procedures include liposuction, breast implants and botox injections. Explaining the dynamism of the sector, the study points out that the figures are set grow by 11.12% in this year.

The study by International Master Course on Ageing Skin (IMCAS) revealed that over 400,000 women around the world received implants made by French firm Poly Implant Prothese (PIP), which is now defunct after having found using industrial-grade silicone gel responsible for causing high rupture rates abnormally. “One thinks that the PIP affair will have short-term impact,” said Mr. Laurent Brones (one of the authors of the study). “There will surely be a negative effect but for a few months and it will be localised,” he added.

Mr. Brone further said that the firm was small and mainly exported its silicone to Europe and Latin America, instead of large markets like USA and Asia. Out of around 20 million women with implants globally, only 1.5% or about 300,000 were using PIP’s product.
