Migraine is form of vascular headache. People who have the problem of migraine, their life gets disrupt due to pain which is very intensive. Migraine afflicts around 28 million Americans. Females are more vulnerable.
What is Migraine?
Migraine Headache is caused due to vasodilatation which means the blood vessels are getting enlarged. This enlargement leads to stretching of nerves which coil around nerves. Nerves then release chemicals, which further cause pain as well as inflammation. The Sympathetic Nervous system of body gets activated in body, which is body’s “fight and flight” response. The Sympathetic Nervous system activation causes nausea, diarrhea, vomiting. This is because the Sympathetic Nervous system activity delays emptying of stomach. Also this prevents oral medication taken for migraine from entering intestine to get absorbed. Oral medication migraine treatment is most of the time ineffective due to impaired absorption. Blood circulation also decreases, hand and feet become cold. Person becomes more sensitive towards light and sound and experience blur vision.
Symptoms of Migraine
Migraine is a chronic condition of headache and migraine is intense, throbbing pain and involves only some part of headache. Pain is mostly unilateral that is on one side of head and although at times bilateral. Migraine headache shifts from one side to another. This is most important symptom; if pain is not shifting then the cause of pain could be something else. Migraine attack can last for 4 to 72 hours. Sensitivity to light and sound, cold feet and hand, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea is symptoms. Premonitory warning symptoms include sleepiness, fatigue, depression, euphoria, irritability, yawning and cravings for sweet or salty food.
Migraine Triggers: trigger is that environmental or body’s physiological factor which leads to headache. These triggers need to identify for knowing migraine cause. Some common migraine cause triggers are:
- Stress
- Odors
- Hormones
- Bright and the flickering lights
- Fasting
- Sleep disturbances
- Cigarette smoke
- Aged cheese
- Monosodium glutamate
- Nitrites
- Chocolate
- Alcohol
- Aspartame
- Caffeine
- Menstruation is also trigger of migraine for some women.
About Migraine different people experience migraine headaches responding to different triggers.
