June 9, 2012: Bihar state of India has been witnessing severe health tragedy in the past 15 days due to an outbreak of an unidentified disease with symptoms similar to that of encephalitis.  This disease has reportedly been responsible for taking away the lives of 73 kids belonging to Muzaffarpur, Patna and Gaya districts of Bihar.

The health department officials of the state called for an emergency meeting on Friday to ascertain the facts in regards to the disease, albeit they haven’t determined the cause of death of these children yet.

It is to be noted that 30 children from Muzaffarpur and 9 from Gaya districts die due to the mysterious disease, while 34 children took their last breadth in the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) during the past fortnight. The children are easily falling prey of this unidentified disease in the state.

The Head of the Department of Paediatric in the PMCH, Dr. Sujata Chaudhary said that 80 children with the symptoms of acute encephalitis syndrome were admitted to the hospital, out of which 34 died. She further added saying that more than 4 dozen children showing signs of an unidentified disease had been admitted in the other two districts’ hospitals. Few among the doctors and health officials have said that the children were showing symptoms of a disease similar to encephalitis.

However, Health Minister Ashwani Kumar Chaubey and Principal Secretary for Heath Amarjit Sinha have straightaway denied all the reports claiming that the children were dying due to suspected encephalitis. Chaubey said that the causes of the death of children have not been ascertained yet.

Earlier in 2011, a mosquito borne disease encephalitis was responsible for taking away the lives of nearly 150 people in the Muzaffarpur and Gaya districts of Bihar.
